Standard itineraries run from five to nine days. The difference between the short and long end is not comfort — it is the amount of time your body gets to adapt to thinning air, and that time is the mechanism by which acclimatisation happens at all.

Why an extra night matters so much
Your body adapts to altitude largely overnight, in response to the height at which it sleeps. Every additional night below 4,000 m is time spent producing the physiological changes that make the summit possible — more red blood cells, changed breathing patterns, better oxygen handling.
An extra day does not just add rest. It changes the shape of the whole profile: it usually means an additional night in the 3,500–4,000 m band, which is exactly where the useful adaptation happens, and it means arriving at high camp less depleted before the hardest night of the trip.
Read the sleeping altitudes, not the day count
Two seven-day itineraries can be very different. Write down the altitude you sleep at each night and look at the shape.
- A straight line upward from 2,800 m to 4,700 m with no dips is asking a lot of you.
- A profile that rises and falls, with two nights somewhere between 3,500 m and 4,000 m, is designed by somebody thinking about your body.
Our eight-day Lemosho sleeps at 2,785, 3,505, 3,900, 3,960, 3,995 and 4,673 m. Five of six nights are below 4,000 m. That is not an accident and it is the most important number on the page.
What about acclimatisation days?
Some itineraries add a "rest day". A day sitting still at altitude is far less useful than a day walking to a higher point and coming back down to sleep. If an itinerary offers an extra day, ask what happens on it. "Climb high, sleep low" is worth considerably more than a lie-in.
Total trip length
Add to your mountain days:
- One night before the climb, minimum — two if your flight lands late
- One night after, and you will want it
- Travel days at both ends
An eight-day climb realistically means about twelve days away from home. If you are adding a safari afterwards, budget another three to five.
